The only part of the existing house worth preserving was the basement. This concrete structure, featuring a garage door and a window, needed only to be slightly modified to accommodate all rooms that don't require natural light. Pieces of the ceiling were cut out to heighten the rooms, and two additional openings were cut into the west-facing exterior wall to connect the existing spaces to the new main room.
